Veteran actress Vivian Velez has launched a fundraising campaign for former actor Dick Israel, whose house in Caloocan was recently struck by fire.
In a Facebook post, Velez said the 57-year-old actor, who has been known in the entertainment industry for taking villain roles, suffered a stroke in 2010 which paralyzed half of his body.
Photos of Israel's plight got the attention of netizens when Sidemoid Dataman called for help for the character actor. Israel's wheelchair was also destroyed by the fire that razed his home.
Damay Kamay, an organization founded by artists to provide assistance to their needy brothers in the movie industry, is coordinating the fundraising.
Velez and Israel worked together in classic films such as "Escolta: Mayo 13 ...Biyernes ng Hapon," "Gameng" and "Sa Nag-aapoy Na Dagat."
Israel has been recognized for his acting career by local award-winning bodies. Among others, he been awarded Best Supporting Actor in 1988 for his role in "Patrolman" at the Metro Manila Film Festival, and in 1995 for in movie "Kanto Boy 2: Anak ni Totoy Guapo" At the FAMAS Awards.
Cash donations can be deposited at Security Banks Tomas Morato branch, under the checking account number 5318 2600 0275 006. Goods can also be dropped off at 7A Sta. Elvira St. Bgy. Kapitolyo, Pasig City.
