The highest leader of the Philippines expressed his utmost support for Gilas Pilipinas.
Newly-minted Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, through executive assistant Bong Go, bared that he plans to watch the national team against France in the opening day of of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament on July 5.
"Sa opening, plano niyang manood to give his support sa mga kababayan," Go told sports website SPIN.ph. "Though hindi siya masyado mahilig sa basketball, alam mo naman si Presidente, pag para sa bayan, full support yan."
However, the outspoken head of state made it clear that he doesn't want to get all the spotlight as much as possible.
"Ang gusto ni Presidente, just as any other ordinary person (lang siya)," said Go, who watched Gilas’ tune-up game against Turkey on Friday night. "Ayaw niya yung special treatment, so merge lang siya sa public and just enjoy the game."
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan is thrilled to be graced by the presence of the President.
"There are indications he might come, but he’s a very busy man, so it’s really up to him," the SBP boss said. "But he’s more than welcome to come."
