SPOILER ALERT! The Purge: Election Year is just one of those most awaited film not only by the horror and bloodthirsty fans but also by the fact that it fits the current chaos "election year." This is the third installment of the not-so-big franchise The Purge which has thrilled us with all the suspense and the lust for killing.
The violence in the first two films wasn't brutal enough but just fine to keep us jumping out of our seats every time someone wields an ax. Also, the fact that these purgers wearing all those classy horrific masks are good enough for our taste.
The Purge films focus on an America where annually, the government sanctions a 12-hour period in which citizens can commit any crime they wish, including murder, LEGALLY. Lower class being separated from the rich families and that most government officials are exempted from being Purged. And that the lower class community gets to be routinely slaughtered to keep wealthy white people in power.
Though the characters from the first installment of The Purge didn't recur at all to the second installment which is The Purge: Anarchy, except Dwayne Bishop (Edwin Hodge) who first appeared as The Stranger and later turned into one of the anti-purge vigilantes, The Purge: Election Year is quite connected to the second installment.
The Purge: Election Year maintains the focus of the story on Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) which we previously saw in the second installment as the father who joined the purge to avenge the death of his child. Now, Barnes is back as a security expert who has relocated from Los Angeles to Washington, and working to protect Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell). Senator Roan, an independent candidate, is fighting to eliminate the Purge after her family was being slaughtered right before her eyes. Now, the New Founding Fathers of America wants Roan out of the picture.
To eliminate Roan, the NFFA decides void the traditional rules of the purge and allowed everyone to use even the restricted weapons, in attempt to assassinated the senator. Typically, Barnes and Roan are the only ones left alive and flee downtown where they joined Joe Dixon (Mykelti Williamson), an African-American convenience store owner, and his loyal employee Marcos (Joseph Julian Soria) to fend off purgers.
The film also introduced some clever scenarios where in they involved some "murder tourists" who comes to America every annual purge for killing spree.
The theme is this third installment just got audiences more thrilled especially after what was currently going on in real life America, where chaos starts to bloom just in time with the election year.
