McDonald's Stops Selling Big Mac in Venezuela

McDonald's revealed on Thursday, July 21, that it has stopped selling Big Macs in Venezuela due to severe food shortages triggered by an economic crisis in the country.

Venezuelan media reported that McDonald's was no longer able to source the thin slice of bread in the Big Mac, that separates the sandwich's two meat patties.

"At McDonald's Venezuela we are working to resolve this temporary situation. Together with our supplier we are evaluating the best options to allow us to continue offering quality products," the fast food company said in a statement.

The company did not provide specific details on the actual reason for the suspension aside from the bread shortage.

McDonald's chains in Venezuela are still serving their other menu items, although they also stopped selling their french fries for 11 months last year because of shortages.

Venezuela has been in economic crisis because of plunge in oil price, the country's main export.

Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro has been fighting for his political life with several issues in the country: long lines, chronic shortages, hyperinflation and violent crimes.

The opposition, which is pushing for a referendum to recall the unpopular leftist, blames the crisis on the failure of the socialist economic model of the past 17 years under Maduro and his late predecessor, Hugo Chavez.
