Gregg Popovich on Tim Duncan: 'He's Irreplaceable'

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was emotional while discussing Tim Duncan's retirement, saying that "He's irreplaceable."

Wearing a black T-shirt with Duncan's image and the words "Impossible is Potential," coach Popovich appeared in a press conference in San Antonio and said farewell to the Spurs' legendary big man.

Duncan did not hold a press conference and just announced his retirement in a brief team release on Monday.

"He is irreplaceable. It can't happen. We're all unique but he's been so important to so many people it's just mind boggling," said Popovich.

He also said Tim Duncan is really the type of person who doesn't want to bring much attention to himself that's why he did not hold any press conference and just headed to retirement.

The Spurs made the playoffs in all 19 of Duncan's seasons, winning 50-plus games all but once, five championships, and last season setting the organization's single season wins record.

The 40-year-old Duncan retires as a 15-time All-Star, 15-time All-NBA selection (10 times on the first team), 15-time All-Defensive team selection and three-time Finals MVP.

Popovich admitted that it would be a challenge for the Spurs to fill Duncan's leadership void. He also pointed out how simple Duncan is a player and just as a person.
