Cable Cars in Manila?

Cable cars in Bolivia.

President-elect Rodrigo Duterte is serious about resolving the worsening traffic crisis in Metro Manila and he is considering installing cable cars in the city to alleviate traffic congestion, incoming Transportation secretary  said on Tuesday.

Arthur Tugade, incoming secretary of Department of Transportation and Communication, said the government is considering adopting the cable car system used in Bolivia to ease traffic and speed up travel time for commuters in the country's capital city.

"I'm borrowing from the Bolivia experience where they use cable cars. We can start in the Pasig area and then move on to EDSA, use gondolas that can carry 35 passengers," he said in Filipino.

Bolivia lauched the world's largest system of cable cars in 2014, which includes 11-kilometer gondola system that ferries passenger from city of La Paz to neighboring El Alto city.

Going airborne could be an alternative solution to ease traffic jams on the street lelve, Tugade said. The proposed cable car system can be operational for the metro's 12 million people within 18 months, if implemented.

Initial talks are ongoing with a company that supplies 35-seater cable cars for commuters in South America.

“Pag nagdagdag tayo ng kalsada at nag-construct tayo, lalong makaka-traffic. Kung gusto mo ng additional capacity, pumunta ka sa itaas,” Tugade told ANC’s “Headstart.”

"Suffice to say, for the moment, that is seriously being looked into," the incoming transportation chief added.

Aside from being another option for transportation, Tugade sadit that the cable car system can also be used as a more scenic mode form of travel.

With initial plans of linking Pasig City and Makati City, Tugade said he is also eyeing a possible cable car system between Santa Rosa, Laguna and Makati City.

Duterte, who will assume office on Thursday, will ask Congress for "special powers" to resolve the traffic issue. This includes opening subdivisions roads to traffic and doing away with public bidding for some infrastructure projects.

It was also reported previously that the government is to build more bridges and flyovers in Metro Manila.
