Brazilians protest in front of the
Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro on Friday against an alleged gang rape
that police say they are investigating.

The brutal gang rape of a 16-year-old
girl caused an uproar in Brazil, where violence against women is threatening.
A 16-year-old girl has reportedly been
raped by at least 30 men in Rio de Janeiro. Everything got worse when a video
clip of the girl “undressed and unconscious lying on a bare mattress”, as described
by the Latina American News Dispatch reports, got viral online. “She was being
filmed by two men, both fully dressed, who took turns manhandling and mocking
her,” said in the report.
Images of the alleged attack on social
media “racked up more than 550 likes and a deluge replies with smiley faces and
thumbs-up,” The Global and Mail reports.
According to the police as told to the Associated Press, the victim was allegedly raped by armed men last Saturday
while visiting a shantytown in western Rio de Janeiro. Other reports said that
the girl was visiting her boyfriend’s house in the area when the assault
happened.
According to the girl’s statement to
police, she woke up last Sunday, naked and injured, and headed home. Days later,
she found out that pictures of her assault was posted on Twitter by her
attackers followed by a 40-second video which was widely shared online.

comments and vulgar language.
According to BBC, police have issued
warrants for the suspects, including the 19-year old boyfriend, though they did
not know whether he may be one of the attackers.
Activists are calling for protests and
have started an online campaign against “a culture rape” in the country.
